Automatic traffic enforcement systems have been used on Finnish highways for as long as two decades. The first posts were erected on main road 1 in the mid-90s. Currently, the camera network covers 3,000 km of road with a total number of approx. 1,000 units.
Cameras have mainly been placed along busy roads. In addition to this, they have been positioned in connection to hazardous junctions to slow down the flow of traffic. The primary goal of the camera surveillance is to keep driving speeds compliant with the speed limits and thereby limit accidents. For this reason, it is a good idea to inform road users of automatic cameras beforehand. The mere knowledge of camera surveillance keeps driving speeds in check and ensures that the goal is met.
The website of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency features a map of the road sections on which the police uses cameras to monitor driving speeds.
