Municipalities are responsible for the address system. Nameplates on a white background may be posted by road owners (= road cooperatives) after an approval from the municipality. The nameplates of private roads are manufactured and positioned following the same instructions as the roads and streets owned by the municipality. In short, you should contact the municipality.
In some cases, direction signs on a black background may be used with private roads (traffic sign no 643, private road sign). The private road sign may be used at the junction of a public and a private road if the private road is important for traffic and open to general traffic. The destination sign of a private road includes the name of the destination and, normally, distance. In these cases, the destination is usually the name of the village or area.
Road cooperatives can apply for a permit from the ELY Centre for Pirkanmaa for this kind of a sign (subject to a fee). Send the free-form application via e-mail to kirjaamo.pirkanmaa@ely-keskus.fi. The road cooperative is responsible for purchasing and erecting the sign.
