Is it better to take the Archipelago Ring Road (the Archipelago Trail) clockwise or counter clock wise?

Article body content

With the exception of the crossing between Houtskär and Iniö (Mossala–Dalen), all the ferries along the Archipelago Ring Road are ordinary road ferries and free of charge. The Houtskär–Iniö crossing is operated only in the summer and has a fee. As this is a subsidised commuter ferry service, there are not as many departures compared with regular ferry traffic. There are only about four daily departures per direction between Houtskär and Iniö, so you should keep this in mind when planning your itinerary. During the high summer season, the ferries operate at full capacity, and it is not guaranteed that there will be room for your vehicle on the ferry. Therefore, at peak periods, it is better to take the Ring Road counter clockwise and start from Iniö, instead of travelling clockwise from the Pargas direction.

Once you have reached Houtskär from Iniö, there are ferry departures in direction of Pargas late into the night, and it is more likely that you can follow your original plan. If you start your Ring Road journey from direction of Pargas, it will take you a long time to get back to the mainland if you miss the last departure from Houtskär to Iniö in the afternoon or if there is no room for you on the ferry.
