Generally, mowing is performed a couple of times a year in southern Finland, once may be enough in the north. Mowing takes place between mid-June and the end of August. A mowing is scheduled for road sections near schools before the start of the school year.
The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s policy on roadside landscaping (mowing, brushwood clearing) is a compromise taking into account road safety, nature and economic aspects. The date of mowing is an issue that each year stirs up debate among road users. However, it should be remembered that roadsides provide unique living conditions for meadow plants, especially due to the regular mowing. If we did not perform mowing (which is impossible in terms of road safety), meadow plants would be stifled by other vegetation. The execution of maintenance tailored annually and according to the ever-changing growth conditions by the roads is not economically viable.
