AIS – Automatic Identification System
The AIS service that FTIA orders maintains an AIS base station network covering the maritime areas of the Finnish coast and the Saimaa deep-water channel. The base station network receives and transmits data transmitted by AIS-A and AIS-B ship equipment. The AIS system is based on on-board radio equipment that continuously and automatically transmits vessel position and identification data. The base station network also enables the transmission of AIS-compliant messages supporting vessel navigation, such as meteorological data, virtual Aids to Navigations (AtoN) and status of AtoN:s.
The service is organised by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and implemented by Fintraffic’s Vessel Traffic Services.
