When will the summer speed limits take effect?

Usually, summer speed limits are rolled out in Finland in late March or early April. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency selects the exact date every year. Summer speed limits are posted in stages from south to north. Road-specific speed limits take effect when the speed limit signs are changed. However, the speed limit is always adapted to the local conditions.

In the spring, the driving conditions are usually better than in the winter because of more daylight hours, for example This enables posting higher variable speed limits of 120 km/h in motorway sections with good driving conditions even before the start of the summer speed limit season.

Higher speed limits can be used in the following sections of road:

  • Main road 1 between Turku - Lohja
  • Main road 7 between Ring Road III - Vaalimaa

However, the maximum speed limit on the aforementioned roads is 100 km/h in dark or winter conditions.

Road conditions may vary considerably by road section and time of day even after the summer speed limits are rolled out. Although the winter speed limits are removed, drivers should be mindful of road conditions and adapt their driving speed to the changing circumstances. Night frost, snow or wet snow in the spring could have notably negative effects on the driving conditions. The speed limits posted along roads are not design speeds. Instead, the safe driving speed may be notably lower.
